Wake Up with Matt and Kim

Posted in wake up songs with tags , , , , , on July 13, 2009 by Digger (Not Phelps)

We were closing up shop at work the other night and I just wanted to get out of there and go to sleep. But then Jackie threw on Matt and Kim’s album “Grand” and suddenly work didn’t seem so bad. Matt and Kim are just a good time.

Wake Up with Let’s Wrestle

Posted in wake up songs with tags on July 9, 2009 by Digger (Not Phelps)

Let’s Wrestle’s new album In the Court of the Wrestling Let’s makes me enjoy life a little more when it’s on. But it also kinda makes me hate my life when I remind myself that all the band members are seven years younger than me. Slacker.

Wake Up with Jenny Owen Youngs

I’m really, really trying not to fall in love with Jenny Owen Youngs because that wouldn’t be productive, right? But the staving off of said love is proving to be quite a chore.

I first became aware of her after hearing her song “F— Was I” in an episode of “Weeds” and while trying to figure out who sang it, figured out who she was and learned that she’s 100% adorable.

JennyOYAnd then her new album Transmitter Failure came out and I’ve been listening to and loving it quite a bit. I share J.O.Y. with you now.

Wake Up with Roman Candle

One of Chapel Hill’s finest released an album in May and I just got a hold of it. (Thanks for finally working eMusic!) I recently read or heard (I can’t remember where) someone describe Roman Candle as what Whiskeytown could have been if Ryan Adams hadn’t been so hard to work with. Sounds about right.

ANYWAY, I promise your day will better if you do listen to “Why Modern Radio is A-OK” than if you don’t.

Wake Up with Patterson Hood

Posted in wake up songs with tags , , , on June 24, 2009 by Digger (Not Phelps)

Was finally able to download stuff from eMusic. Thankfully.

In case you don’t know, Patterson Hood is the frontman for the Drive-By Truckers, the best Southern rock band of all time. Hood is a prolific songwriter, to say the least, but allows room for other members to contribute to DBT albums so he’s got lots of material in his back pocket ready to go.

Hence, he’s released his second solo album: Murdering Oscar (and Other Love Songs).

It’s not very surprising that it’s very good. There’s much more of a band presence than on his first solo disc, as he gets backing help from DBT members, as well as Will Johnson and other members of Centro-Matic (good band, by the way). Not only that, but his father, legendery Muscle Shoals bassist David Hood, also plays on the album.

Enjoy a couple songs.

eMusic frustration / Wake Up with Deastro

Posted in opinions, wake up songs with tags , , , , , on June 23, 2009 by Digger (Not Phelps)

I re-joined eMusic this morning because Sunset Rubdown, Dinosaur Jr., and Patterson Hood all released new albums today. I want them ther’ alllbuummms! And, for twelve bucks, I should be able to get all three and still have about 65 song downloads left over. Which should be awesome. But eMusic won’t let me download them. They are there, staring me in the face, with a big ole’ “DOWNLOAD ALBUM” button right smack at the top of the page. But it’s a broken link. Every time. WTF, eMusic?

W. T. F?

Fortunately I was able to download the Deastro album Moondagger that came out earlier this month and is pretty solid so far.

Here are a couple new tracks and a new version of an old track that I really dig so you can hear what I’m listening to while I clean my soon-to-be-ex-apartment, try to write the next Benjamin Dyer film, and constantly hit the Firefox Refresh button.

Deastro – Tone Adventure #3

Deastro – Vermillion Plaza

Deastro – The Shaded Forests (Gift Giver’s Version)

P.S. Doesn’t “Firefox, Refresh!” sound like something an 80’s cartoon hero should say?

Enjoy some Rural Alberta Advantage

Posted in wake up songs with tags , , , , on June 20, 2009 by Digger (Not Phelps)

My friend Leah was in town last night because her band Lost in the Trees was playing quite the enjoyable show at The Boot. [You can check them out in all their goodness HERE.] She was telling me the story of how Jeff Mangum (of Neutral Milk Hotel fame) was at a show they played in New York, which is crazy to begin with, but led to me telling her that she (like anyone who dug NMH) should check out The Rural Alberta Advantage.

The RAA were featured on “eMusic Selects…” last year and I believe their album Hometowns will be getting a major release sometime this summer. [Ed. Note: Even though it was already one of Dropout’s “Top 25 Albums of 2008“…]

ANYWAY, I am a fan and I post these tracks here so Leah and everyone else can become one as well.

The Rural Alberta Advantage – The Ballad of the RAA

The Rural Alberta Advantage – Rush Apart

The Rural Alberta Advantage – The Deathbridge in Lethbridge

The Rural Alberta Advantage – Luciana

The Rural Alberta Advantage – Frank, AB

The Rural Alberta Advantage – Edmonton
